| The University Lab Server (ULS) is an optional component of VirtualUnknown Microbiology that allows individual student computers to be linked to a centralized database that is controlled by instructor(s). The software contains an administrative interface, the Admin Console that instructor(s) use to set the parameters for how the Virtual Lab for Students (VLS) performs. For instance,
instructors may control the following aspects of the student software: how many pre-assigned identification sessions will be provided for each student whether the unknown bacterium for a session is selected by the instructor or randomly assigned by the software whether bacteria are automatically eliminated from the identification matrix when results are recorded whether the online help references on bacteria, media, tests, and reagents are accessible to the student for a particular session and many other features
The ULS database is hosted by Intuitive Systems, Inc. and allows VLS and Admin Console connections via the internet (WAN). Using the ULS Admin Console, an instructor is able to configure user accounts and laboratory sessions for VLS computers. When students complete their work, lab report files detailing the students’ work
are collected by the server. The instructor can view and print these reports from the Admin Console as well. And the Admin Console may be installed on several computers, which provides a mechanism for instructors to access the ULS database from their offices, or even from home (providing internet access is available). ULS allows instructor(s) to configure VLS sessions for any combination of on-campus and remote student computers.
