Frequently Asked Questions
What control does the instructor have over the configuration of the software?

If your institution has adopted ONLY the student software, the instructor is unable to configure the settings on student unknowns. However, if your institution also adopts the University Lab software, the instructor has the ability to configure a student's software remotely to allow a degree of instructor control over what students are doing. Instructors can limit which bacteria and tests to include to meet the needs of their students. Advanced classes may have all bacteria and tests activated, while non-majors classes may want only an abbreviated number of tests and significant bacteria included.
Instructors also decide whether to give each student the same bacterium, to specify what microbe each student gets, or to allow them to be assigned randomly from those included in the class configuration. Instructors can elect to require students to manually eliminate bacteria based on the results, or the software will eliminate from consideration those bacteria with results in direct contradiction to those recorded by the student.

Most importantly, instructors can set up the software so Help reference files are unavailable to students. In this setup, VUMicro is very useful for assessing student competency; students must do the work without their safety net.

When used for Distance Learning, all of these features can be controlled on the student's computer remotely through codes transmitted by phone or email. This allows the DL student to receive the same instruction using VUMicro as those students in a campus computer lab.
